Full Complaint Details
My father was admitted to the ICU at Manipal Hospital on 29th August at approximately 11:00 P.M. At the time of admission, an initial deposit of approximately ₹50,000 was collected from us.
However, within less than 48 hours, an interim bill dated 31st August at 7:33 P.M. was raised for approximately ₹2.5 lakh, which is an extremely substantial increase from the initial deposit and has caused serious concern regarding the charges being levied.
We are particularly concerned about the continued ICU stay. At around 12:00 noon on 31st August, the treating doctor informed us that my father could be shifted from the ICU to the general ward. At that point, my father was able to walk independently, and, to our understanding, there were no major life-support devices or other critical interventions being used that would have prevented his transfer. Despite this, the transfer was delayed by approximately 10 hours, resulting in continued ICU charges.
We repeatedly requested to meet the treating doctor and, specifically, the ICU doctor under whose care my father had been admitted. Despite waiting for approximately 3–4 hours, the doctor did not meet us or provide us with a satisfactory explanation regarding the continued ICU stay. We are further concerned that immediately after we left, instructions were again given to install a monitoring machine in the ICU, despite the earlier communication that my father could be shifted to the general ward.
When we subsequently insisted on speaking with the doctor and sought clarification regarding the medical necessity for continued ICU care and the additional monitoring, we were still unable to obtain a proper response.
The above circumstances have raised serious concerns for us regarding the necessity of the prolonged ICU stay, the delay in shifting the patient despite the doctor's earlier advice, the additional ICU/monitoring charges, and the lack of timely communication from the treating team.
We therefore request the hospital to:
1. Provide a clear medical justification for the continued ICU stay between 12:00 noon and the actual time of transfer to the general ward;
2. Explain the reason for the approximately 10-hour delay in shifting the patient despite the doctor's advice;
3. Provide details of the monitoring equipment/services subsequently instructed or installed and the corresponding charges;
4. Clarify why the treating/ICU doctor was unavailable to meet and explain the patient's condition despite our waiting for several hours; and
5. Review and appropriately reverse/adjust any charges arising from an unnecessary or avoidable continuation of ICU care.
We request that this matter be treated seriously and that a written clarification be provided at the earliest, along with the relevant medical and billing records supporting the charges raised.
